Canoeing is often referred to as “art” as much as “sport”. It is a very traditional way to explore the lakes and rivers around us. Canoes are very versatile craft and with some training can be used to explore incredibly magical places. Knowing what to do if things go wrong in the back country is an essential skill for anyone that wants to spend time in the outdoors. We offer 4 day (WAFA) and 8 day (WFR) certification courses for trip leaders, guides, instructors and private boaters who want to make sure they are properly prepared for any scenario. Yukon Avalanche Courses

Avalanche TrainingWinter travel in the Yukon back country can be both exhilarating and challenging…but it doesn’t have to be dangerous! Being prepared, recognizing hazardous terrain and making educated decisions helps you go out, play hard and come home safe!

We are proud to offer the AST Level 1 and Level 2 courses taught by Avalanche North and The Sharp End, two local avalanche safety training providers. Learn how to plan ahead, protect yourself and rescue others in the winter wilderness by taking one of these courses developed by the Canadian Avalanche Association and the Canadian Avalanche Centre!

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

Being prepared in the back country is more than a Boy Scout motto. It’s essential for travel in the remote Yukon wilderness. Wilderness Medical Associates Canada courses are the industry standard for Guides, Instructors and Outdoor Professionals across North America.

The WFR is not just for people earning a living in the outdoors. If you find yourself in places that may take more than a few minutes to get help, this is the course for you! A full range of topics spread out over an 8 day, 80 hour course will ensure you are as ready as possible to head outside. Hands on training balanced with classroom work make this the most comprehensive wilderness medical course available. Several Certifications included in course tuition.

Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA)

This 4 day, 40 hour WMA Canada course is perfect for recreational outdoor enthusiasts that want the basic knowledge to help them travel safely and enjoyably in the back country. Many common topics are covered during the class discussion and practiced in the field scenarios.

Couple SurfingThis year we are excited to announce new courses for the Adventure School Program. Join us and learn how to paddle whitewater and/or refine your whitewater paddling skills. There are two different levels of courses to prepare you for paddling Yukon’s amazing rivers. There is also an exclusive Womens only weekend in June!

Introduction to Moving Water

2 days

Join us for a two day introduction to moving water. You will learn the basic skills, knowledge and techniques to manoeuvre through simple rapids. The course begins with flatwater paddling skills and progresses to moving water concepts, skills and techniques. Each course is customized to your particular needs and abilities. By the end of this course, you will be paddling and smiling your way down class two rapids with confidence!

Takhini River Whitewater Clinic

Come learn how to whitewater canoe the Takhini River with a certified Paddle Canada Whitewater Canoe Instructor. This is a 1 day  introduction to whitewater canoeing in a safe and fun learning environment.

The course begins on flatwater with an introduction to whitewater paddling strokes, manoeuvres, and techniques. The afternoon is spent running the river, learning rescue techniques and river reading.

Shuttle from Up North Adventures to the river is provided.

Women’s Whitewater Retreat Weekend

Come join us for an exciting weekend away on the Takhini River for our Women’s beginner to advanced whitewater clinic. The retreat  focuses on learning new paddling skills, exercising, eating great food and spending time with an inspirational group of all female paddlers.

To optimize your skill development our Paddle Canada Instructor provides one-on-one feedback throughout the course. We focus on refining your paddling style and skill sets. Furthermore, you learn in a supportive and fun environment, where there is time made for questions.

We begin with a flatwater evening session reviewing basic to advanced whitewater techniques and skills, then the next morning is spent running the Upper Takhini River. The following topics are covered over the 2 full days; basic to advanced paddling strokes, river scouting, self-rescue and assisted rescue.

The second day consists of running the lower Takhini River and the Jaws. It is a fun Class II rapid, that gives participants the opportunity to try new manoeuvers and techniques in a safe environment.

The retreat is fully catered by Up North Adventures, with gourmet meals provided for Saturday and Sunday.

Introduction to Canoeing

Introduction to CanoeingWhat could be more Canadian than the image of exploring a wilderness river by canoe? If the very thought fills you with doubt or concern, than it’s time for one of our ½ day canoe courses!

During the ½ day class, our talented Instructors will introduce you to the “Art of Canoeing”. Before long, you’ll surprise yourself by quickly learning how to safely launch and land, paddle forward and reverse, turn both ways and properly load for a trip. If you have always wanted to learn how to properly do a Canadian J-stroke then this course is for you!

This course is geared towards paddlers that have completed the Intro to Kayak Course (or equivalent experience) and are looking to learn about “what to do if things go wrong”! During this 4 hour course, we’ll cover a range of topics including clothing and equipment selection, bracing strokes, wet exits, buddy re-entry and paddle float re-entry.

Advanced Kayak RescueAdvanced Kayak Rescue

Paddlers that have completed the Intro to Kayak Course and the Intro to Rescue should plan to join us for this 4 hour course. After a review of rescue techniques such as bracing, paddle float and buddy re-entry, we move on to more advanced techniques including towing, stirrup re-entry and an introduction to kayak rolling.

Yukon Kayak Fishing

Introduction to CanoeingWhy Kayak Fishing? The answer is simple – You catch more fish! Kayaks allow anglers to access lakes and rivers that have never seen a lure, have very little fishing pressure, make no noise and create no pollution. Kayaks are safe and easy to use, require very little maintenance and are affordable!

This is your chance to learn all about his exciting new sport. Our course consists of 2 evening sessions and 1 full day session. It is designed to give you the fundamentals of both kayaking and kayak fishing and get you started in the right direction. Fish on!

Day 1: Introduction to Kayaking

This three hour course will give you all the skills you need to enter and exit the kayak, launch and land, basic strokes required for safe paddling, equipment choices and a brief introduction to kayak rescues

Day 2: Introduction to Kayak Fishing

On our second night, our Instructors will teach you how to fish from your kayak. Topics include casting, trolling, landing fish, catch and release techniques, and rigging your boat for maximum safety, ease and efficiency. We’ll be targeting Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling tonight.

Day 3: Full Day of Kayak Fishing

Day three offers the chance to practice what we’ve learned so far in our first two classes. Under the watchful eye of our Instructors, we’ll spend the entire day exploring Snafu lake. Blending our paddling skills with either fly rod or spin cast, we’ll be stalking Northern Pike, Arctic Grayling and Lake Trout. The days starts at 7:00 am at Up North Adventures where the van and driver will have the trailer loaded with our boats and gear. We’ll be back in town by 6:00 pm.
